"I am the living bread that came from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. The bread I will give to bring life to the world is my flesh." John 6:51 God's Word to the Nations
We human creatures are continually searching for the fountain of youth, the magic pill, the miracle cure, that will eradicate the sting of death. On top of this desire to eradicate death, is our craving to live a relevant life. We know that our time is short so we don't want to be forgotten when we die.
Jesus spoke these words in John 6 after he had miraculously fed over 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. That bread was not the fountain of youth, the magic pill or the miracle cure. Yes, it energized the people so that they wouldn't faint on their journey home. However, the next day they again needed bread to sustain their health.
Jesus is the bread that brings life; eternal life. Jesus is the bread that sustains us and declares our lives relevant on this earthly pilgrimage.
Note that the miracle Jesus performed was not the feeding of the "1" but the "5,000." It was celebrated in the context of community. Together they shared the bread and ate of the fish.
We celebrate the feast in the community of God's people, among those who know their identity is in Christ. This relevant life is lived in the community of God's people as they together feast on him.
As we dine on the Bread of Life in the community of God's people, we acknowledge that our destiny is secure. Partaking of Jesus guarantees life for eternity with him even if we are forgotten when we die.
Holding on to this destiny is part of what it means to be true to God.
